GENIE - OD AND ASSESSMENT TOOLS DESIGNED WITH YOU IN MIND
Jacques Haworth, in conjunction with MWeb Business and with substantial investment from Bioss International, has designed and programmed new functionality into the BIOSS GENIE database system. Clients can now use access-controlled passwords to manage their own assessment database and update organizational capability reports.
The new functionality includes:
1. New look and feel and improved speed.
2. One login which allows users to search not just their own database, but the entire BIOSS database to ascertain whether an individual has an existing capability result before scheduling a capability assessment.
3. Improved person-job graph functionality.
4. User permissions that allow permissions within and across company units for customized access, reporting, mapping and graphing. It is now much easier to group individuals into multiple groups within a matrix structure and draw person-job maps and growth curve plots for these individual units.
5. Ability to upload other assessment information.
The requirements for having access to capability information on GENIE is:
- Successfully complete the BIOSS Custodian Workshop (2010 dates provided in this newsletter, booking can be completed online on www.bioss.co.za)
- Be nominated by your company as the person responsible for dealing with talent management.

ARTICLE: DAY OF JUDGEMENT
"It's the only game in town. First you listen to the leprechauns inside and then you make up your mind. But then you have to produce a solution that doesn't look too much as if you've just thrown the bones. And then you've got to get it right; well, seven times out of ten anyway. And it must just happen; once you start thinking about it, you're dead; my must trust the spirit and go with it."
(Chief Executive of a multi-national Energy Corporation speaking about decision-making)
Requisite Institutions and the Exercise of Discretion
While both these ideas had been the subject of thought and literature over the centuries, Elliott Jaques' unique contribution was to forge a systematic set of connections between them. This chapter is about the part played by the exercise of discretion in his fundamental theme of requisite social institutions.

I am not exacly sure where it started. Maybe it was the 5th speeding ticket, or just eating because I was hungry and only realising afterwards I didn't know or care what the food tasted like in the first place. I felt aware of everything - the wind blowing, the leaves rustling, an ant on my foot, the grass under my hand, the clarity of my thoughts. At that moment I felt like I could solve any problem, listen to anyone's input, make good decisions and face any difficulty. This had nothing to do with being fast, but everything to do with slowing down ...
